When the idea of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is brought up, apprehension and doubt tend to be the go-to reactions, especially when it comes to implementing AI in the workplace. People think of The Terminator and Skynet taking over, or at a minimum having AI come in and replace them in their jobs. I can see where some of that mistrust comes from, but one the whole I am more excited to see where AI can take us, and how it can help mitigate the need for tedious and monotonous tasks and give us the freedom to work on the more creative aspects of Learning & Development.

As AI becomes more integrated into the workplace, I believe we will see a shift where a focus on the efficiency and creativity become the new normal. An AI powered LMS has the potential to collect data and personalize learning journeys. It can test a learner’s knowledge in specific skills and subjects, and determine if or where training needs to focus for the individual. On my L&D team we have multiple employees who’s role is solely to manage the LMS and learner journey, however their skillset would be much better applied towards more creative aspects of the job. Smaller more monotonous tasks like creating quizzes and multiple choice options, SOP’s, or editing text will also be organized easily through AI.

With these tasks no longer needed to be done by us, now the L&D role shifts to one of more creativity, and even here we can leverage AI to our advantage. AI cannot replace the creative thinking of a Learning professional, and that is why it won’t be taking our jobs. If anything, working with AI will lead to more interactive, impactful learning. We can use it to build more gamification into eLearning, leading to higher motivation amongst learners. Using the LMS functions to test knowledge and build learning journeys specific to the learner will further motivate and excite the learner to grow in their roles.

I believe AI should be looked at not with apprehension, but with excitement at what it can help us achieve. The future of L&D looks bright with AI on our side.
